Ice Pilots 10A Salvage
« on: February 23, 2014, 05:07:09 PM »

Interesting clip...gives a good feel for scale of the plane and parts (for those of us with no idea).  There is also a full episode where they recovered the tail for a memorial.

Not clear just how legal all that was.

I'm pretty sure Ric has been to that wreck.  Are we sure this is a 10A?  If the 10A and the 10E use the same gear, might be a good thing to go study since the fork, fender, and the worm gear are all there.

I couldn't find the tail recovery video, you might want to post that.

Thanks

Andrew

As I understand it, the old man was the pilot who planted the Electra in the marsh in the first place.

I'll bet he is the owner of the wreck--or knows the owner of the wreck.

Some prior discussion of recovery of tail fin can found here:
http://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,1079.msg28083.html#msg28083

Ice Pilot's episode 12, season 4 can be found at:
http://www.history.ca/

Recovery of tail was labor of love for Buffulo's president, who learned from pilot who crashed electra. They recovered the tail for pilot's family.

A photo of the recovered tail at Buffalo Airways can be seen here (scroll down page to "remains of CF-HTV"):

--also noted at Tighar forum, 4/18/13, in email from Gary Lang to Moleski:

The full history of the crashed lockheed can be found at:
http://www.1000aircraftphotos.com/Transports/ElectraB.htm
It started out as a Lockheed 10-C for Pan Am according to the information there and was converted to a 10-A later in its life with a change of engines.

Tighar faq with notation about #1005 (which can be updated to note partial recovery of tail section and now landing gear.)

Probably should have put these links in my original post. Hope this helps for some who are not familiar.
