Bridget Judge Interview with Florence Coffey
18 July 1994
Transcription:

Bridget Judge, wife of Patrick Judge

  • Age 86 — born in 1908
  • Would have been 19 years old in 1927
  • At present her memory may not be accurate

Claims her husband found several pieces of metal in the Gull Pond. This man theorized that the “Blue Bird” had crashed at this particular site and that the metal he had found was a piece of the wreck. The plane was reported to have flown over Cape St. Mary’s at 8:30 pm on May 09, 1927 by the lighthouse keeper. (The name of the plane may be assumed from color of pieces found.) Local people claim that there was a loud bang later that evening.

Patrick Judge found 3 pieces of the wreck in the winter time (while trapping). The pieces was found on the island, situated in the centre of the pond. James Joe Doyle (Bridget’s uncle by marriage and the man who raised her) accompanied Patrick Judge and was to have possessed one of these pieces. (This piece was later lost in a stable fire.) Patrick sent a piece into St. John’s but never received any information back. The piece was “as large as a plate.” Bridget describe piece of metal as having a light blue paint on it.

Some facts given which cannot be verified (sceptical)

  • The plane passed over Gooseberry Cove at 8:30 pm. See lights. (daughter believes she is confused with another sighting during WWII)
  • James Joe Doyle was [said?] to have seen marks on the edge of the Gull Pond. These marks would fit the theory that the White Bird glided into the pond and attempted to take advantage of the entire body of water. The plane the[n] plunged into a partly obscured island.
