He was three months' shy of twelve years old on 2 July 1937.

Gore Vidal is the source of at least two Earhart legends:

That Earhart was the love of his father's life.
That George Putnam and Gene Vidal tried to dissuade Earhart from making the fatal flight with Noonan.
