Shortly after arriving at Wheeler Field.

Earhart, Manning, Noonan, and Mantz left Oakland on 17 March 1937 heading westward. Mantz was there just for the first leg to Hawaii. Manning was to be left behind after the flight from Hawaii to Howland Island. Noonan and Earhart were to complete the flight from there. The crash while attempting to take off on 20 March ended the first attempt.
