Shortly after arriving at Wheeler Field.

Earhart, Manning, Noonan, and Mantz left Oakland on March 17, heading westward. Mantz was there just for the first leg to Hawaii. Manning was to be left behind after the flight from Hawaii to Howland Island. Noonan and Earhart were to complete the flight from there. The crash while attempting to take off on March 20 ended the first attempt.
