Pacific Islands Monthly, April, 1942

Bevington and his wife escaped from Tarawa by different
routes.  She and the kids were evacuated.  He was on
the Kiakia and got a radio message that warned him that
Tarawa had fallen.  The Kiakia was able to make it to
Suva by using sail and rationing water.  Sir Harry Luke
sent the whole family on furlough to NZ for three months.

   BSIP: British Solomon Islands Protectorate

Dr Lindsay Isaac is reported to have arrived in Suva from
Tarawa, though it does not not say how he escaped.  His
mother was a resident of Sydney.

New sport developed: "Air-Gunning for Mosquitoes."  The
best way to get them was to use BB-pistols without
loading any BB's.  A properly-directed blast of air
would squish them against the wall.

Lots of ads and stories of Lockheed 14's.  Do we need to check Lockheed 14's for 2-2-V-1 fit?

Re: The Search for Amelia Earhart Goes On (Nov. 25. 1937 issue)

Wishful thinking.  Dimity couldn't raise the money.  Never happened.

That would be tough.  Very few Lockheed 14s survive and those that do are Hudson bombers.  As far as I know, there were never any Model 14s anywhere near Niku.  The U.S. Navy had Model 18s (Venturas) at Canton, but we've checked the Model 18 at the Air Force Museum.  The 18 was flush-riveted.  Not sure about the 14.

Please welcome new Forum member Keith Gordon.  Keith is from New Zealand and participated in the Niku IX expedition as a diver.  It was Keith who turned us on to the digitized PIM archive.

Welcome, Keith.  The PIM's make for fascinating reading.  Really put faces and places to our cast of characters in the south pacific.

Well done!

Thanks for the welcome Bill. You can find reference to Gallagher's death in PIM Oct 1941 article about Phoenix Islands. My wedding photo also appears in PIM Nov 1965 - you couldn't get away with much in the South Pacific in those days!

Two more items from PIM:

Here's the article Keith pointed me to outlining Gallagher's death.

The second item is in the middle of a long piece detailing the author's travels around the islands.  It talks about the unfortunate acronym and later talks about Eric Bevington's rather uncommon good luck.  Start reading at that scrap of a paragraph at bottom of p. 32.

That's really funny about the unfortunate acronym.  I always assumed that is was intentional and tongue-in-cheek, but it was apparently foot-in-mouth.
