I was browsing google maps having read some of the hypotheses of Amelia Earhart and I noticed an outlined shape on the south-east side of Mackean Island. I'm not saying it's related but can anyone make it out what it might be?

It's not offshore.  Those are the remains of the building put up to house the laborers for the mid-19th century guano diggings.  I've been there. (I have no desire to go back. McKean is a horrible place.)

Likely the wreck of the F/V Chance if it's the object on the east reef
"Korean fishing vessel the MV Chance shipwrecked on McKean in the early 2000s and is the probable source of Asian black rats on the island, which were successfully eradicated in 2008."

You may be right Greg.  We were there in 1989.

Just how horrible can sinking up to your chest in liquid poop be?

On second thought, never mind. Reminds me too much of a past life.

I didn't get up to my chest but when it got up to my knees I realized I had better take remedial action.  I was by myself (dumb) and radio calls to my colleagues describing my plight were received with glee rather than assurances of assistance. I succeeded in extracting myself from the odiferous mire. It's amazing what you can do when sufficiently motivated.

One man's pile of guano is another's... well, guano.

A bit different line of reason, but I'm reminded of the freezing sparrow that crashed in a field thinking surely to die, only to suddenly find itself smothered and thawed by warm cow dung, then chirping with happiness in new-found warmth, only to be 'saved' by the cat...

So maybe just as well - he who dumps on you is not necessarily your enemy, and he who would pull you out of the guano is not necessarily your friend.  :P
