EATING COCONUT CRABS

Seems to me that anything living could be considered edible, especially in dire straits.  Perhaps the crabs were too much trouble to catch (EDIT- and perhaps too terrifying!) and AE/FN were able to subsist on the clams and birds.  Why risk a good crabbing when you could easily catch birds?

Well, actually they do.  Given that coconut is a big part of their diet (complimented by the occasional brown rat) it isn't surprising that the crabs taste a bit like coconut. 

Frankly, it was a bit too sweet for my personal taste, but would be far and away preferable to eating sea bird who's primary diet makes them apparently taste and smell like low tide leftovers.
