Forensic Determination of Amelia Earhart’s Height

A Report on Earhart’s Height Determined by Photogrammetry

by Jeff Glickman, Board Certified Forensic Examiner

Overview:

Amelia wasn’t quite as tall as she said she was. TIGHAR photogrammetry expert Jeff Glickman has completed the first forensic measurement of Amelia Earhart’s height by comparing an historical photo of her standing beside her Lockheed Vega 5B with a scaled reference photo the same aircraft, now exhibited at the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. On her pilot’s license, Earhart listed her height as 5 feet 8 inches. Glickman concluded that her actual height was 5 feet 7 1/8th inches. The discrepancy, while small, is important in addressing the question of whether the skeleton found on Nikumaroro in 1940 was that of Amelia Earhart.
