You are looking at the telegram RECEIVED in Oakland between 3:48 and 3:59 a.m. on July 2nd in California. This means that it was sent on the last leg of its trip starting at 2148 Lae time (9:48 p.m.) July 2nd. They had already left 11 hours and 48 minutes earlier. This was not sent as a "priority" radiogram so it had to wait it's turn before being sent on at each relay station.

Wow, the timing of that message's arrival in California seems ironic as can be, Gary.  Think of that.

LTM -
It helps to look at the header, and I have attached the first and last pages of this long telegram from Earhart at Lae to the Herald Tribune which was printed in the July 3rd edition of the paper. It was a long message sent in five parts totaling 570 words and sent in 100, 150, 149, 150 and 21 word sections. Each section covers two pages except the last short section.

----------------------------------------------------------

For the first part of the five part message:

FAB55     is an identification for this multi-part message used for reassembling the message since other messages were received between
the five parts of this long message.

VIA RCA F= LAE NG   it was carried by RCA (Radio Corporation of America, a radiogram) from Lae New Guinea

570   total words including the address.

1/100   this is the first part and it contains 100 words.

PRESS COLLECT   the rate was a special rate for the press which was one-half of the normal rate.

1937   JUL  2   AM  3 48   this first part was received in Oakland at 3:48 a.m. local time on July 2, 1937.

--------------------------------------------------------

The last part of the message:

FAB55  5/21 = TRIBUNE OAKLAND CALIF    same identification, 5th part containing 21 words, and the address is repeated in each part.

1937   JUL  2   AM  3 59   this 5th part was received in Oakland at 3:59 a.m. local time on July 2, 1937.
