This, of course, is the airplane that Linda Finch (with lots of help) flew around the world in March-May 1997 commemorating the 60th anniversary of Earhart's ill-fated world flight attempt.  The airplane has a long history.

The 15th Electra built, it's the second oldest Lockheed 10 in existence.  (The Pima Air Museum has c/n 1011.)  Constructor's Number 1015 was built as a 10A (450 hp R-985 engines) and delivered to Northwest Airlines on March 7, 1935 as NC14900. In 1942 it was drafted and served in the USAAF as a UC-36.  After the war it was sold to the Brazilian Air Force who later sold it to Varig Airlines (Brazil).  Varig replaced the engines with 550 hp R-1340s which, technically, made the airplane a 10E. (The only surviving Electra that was built as a 10E is Grace McGuire's c/n  1015 returned to the U.S. in 1956 and carried passengers for Tiburzi Airlines in CT and later Carson Airlines in Boston. In 1969 it was sold to Zephyr Aviation in Zephyrhills, FL, for hauling skydivers.

On June 9, 1970 the airplane was damaged in an accident in Tampa.  Preparing to take off, the pilot set the brakes and applied power to raise the tail prior to releasing the brakes. The airplane stood on its nose causing substantial damage. By 1972 the plane was parked derelict beside the runway at Wimbish Airport in Greensboro, NC where it languished until 1983 when it was purchased by Donald Fournier of Amery, WI.  Fournier's plan was to restore the airplane and fly it around the world with a woman copilot, but a divorce squashed that plan and the plane sat, partially disassembled, in a hangar in Amery for the rest of the decade.  In 1990 the aircraft was sold to John Magofinn and Fred Patterson for rebuild as a replica of Earhart's c/n 1055 to be flown around the world by Texas real estate agent and nursing home operator Linda Finch. The hulk remained in Amery until at least October of 1992 when TIGHAR examined and photographed it there.

The plane was eventually moved to Texas for rebuild as a replica of c/n 1055.  The rebuild involved extensive modification of the airframe, often incorporating parts borrowed from other surviving Electras with a promise to return the components after the 1997 commemorative world flight was completed. Those promises were largely not honored, resulting in a lot of bad feeling toward Finch.

In 2000, New Mexico millionaire Mike Kammerer purchased the airplane from Finch for $995,000 hoping to use the aircraft in a film about solving the Earhart mystery, but the mystery didn't get solved and Kammerer died in 2007.  At last report, his daughter Kristen Wolf was intent upon flying the airplane around the world herself but its presence on eBay suggests that those plans have changed.

Very interesting history. Thanks Ric. I haven't heard Kammerer's name in a while; was not aware of his death. You may recall I saw his PBY sitting down in Greybull, WY some years back. Hawkins & Powers were doing some work on it then.

It will be interesting to see where this Electra goes next.

I see that Ric stated it is a replica and I also noticed that it is carrying the same number as Amelia's 10E.  Is that legal?  I thought that it would have to carry its own numbers or would someone be able to "acquire" that registration number somehow since it had been inactive for a long period of time?  Just curious...

So, of the 148 Lockheed Electra 10's originally built, the surviving 12 are as follows:

1)  1011, Model10A, Pima Air Museum, Tucson, AZ

2)  1015, Model10E, Conversion, used to belong to Linda Finch, San Antonio, TX, then sold to Mike Kammerer, now belongs to his daughter, and now for sale on ebay.

3)  1026, Model10A, Western Aerospace Museum, Oakland, CA

4)  1042, Model10E, Grace McGuire, Lakehurst, NJ (Does McGuire still own this one?)

5)  1052, Model10A, New England Air Museum, Windsor Locks, CT

6)  1091, Model10A, Dr. James Almand, Denton, TX

7)  1095, Model10A, Museum of Technology and Transport, Auckland, NZ

8 )  1107, Model10A, Marshall Airways Museum, Bankstown, Australia

9)  1112, Model10A, Nat'l Aero Collection, Ottawa, Ontario

10) 1116, Model 10A, Western Canada Av. Mus., Winnipeg,Manitoba

11) 1130, Model 10E, Conversion, used to belong to Beuhler Foundation, Ft.Lauderdale, FL, is now in the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Florida.

12) 1138, Model 10A, Museum of Technology and Transport,Auckland, NZ

(The above list was provided to me years ago by Ric Gillespie, I just updated it a bit.)

The airplane also carries its own actual registration number N72GT.

When is the last time you saw it there?  Grace McGuire had her plane someplace around there for a while before moving it to Gillespie Field in San Diego.  She may have moved it back.

As of June 2011 Grace still owned 1042;

1042 10E

It appears there are (5) Model 10's listed on the link that do not appear on the list Alfred posted. Could one of these be the one Gary knows of if it is not Grace McGuires? Also, two of the five (1059, 1066) are listed as status unknown...

Too bad TIGHAR cannot rent this plane from Kristen Wolf and do a few experiments that could shed light on fuel consumption and perhaps even radio propagation. If her father was set out to solving the mystery, perhaps she would indulge?
