These concrete arrows, often lit by beacons, pointed the way for airmail service, installed between 1926 and 1932,

Thanks Matt.  I'd heard of these navaids before but never seen one.  Now I see I was maybe fifty feet from the one in Great Bend, KS in September when I was there for the Great Bend AirFest.  I wish I'd known.  Thanks again for this fascinating bit of history.
