Getting started with the forum
« on: May 21, 2009, 01:42:53 PM »

This is a new installation of Simple Machines Forum.

It will take us a while to learn the ropes.

"With great power comes a steep learning curve."  :-\

Here is an article on how to post a reply in the Forum.

And a podcast covering pretty much the same material.

Pat Thrasher is having trouble logging in.

I had trouble using her credentials.

I got logged in but now can't log her out.

The adventure continues!  ???

OK, I deleted the cookie that the system issued when I logged in as Pat Thrasher.

That's a temporary fix.  I had chosen "stay logged in forever."  I guess that may
be why the logout didn't work.

But we have to find out why she couldn't log in herself.

My technique was to log into Joomla first, then log in to the forum.

There has to be a better way.

I got logged into the forum by logging into Joomla first, as you recommended. Meanwhile, Dan Postellon wants to join and I got an email (automated) that he needed to be approved, but I can't figure out how to do that after looking through the various menus.

Dan Postellon also had trouble logging in.

I've rechecked JFusion.

Re-disabled registration on this side.

Restarted JFusion.

There may be one more component that we need to automate login into both systems from Joomla.

I seem to have skipped a step when installing JFusion and configuring things to connect to SMF.

We'll see whether following the rest of the directions will help with going from Joomla to the forum.

I don't know how images work with the forum.

I'm not a forum user by temperament.

I'm attaching a small image of album art, I think.

I don't know how it will turn out.

The album has a song on it about one of my great-grandfathers.
His wife died giving birth to twins and he never remarried.

The song is "O'Shaughnessy's Lament."

Well, that will teach me not to look at images I upload!

This image is a thumbnail from my Picasa albums, imported by putting the URL in the img tags.

Maybe the forum will let me put a link to the larger image:

It works if I get the URL to view the image.  It doesn't work if I just give the ... oh, wait ... I'm gonna nemmermind myself because I just realized that the URL has to lead directly to the image and not just to a page that the image is on.   ::)

This is my first web forum posting. :D  I'm just playing with the tools to see how they work.  The hi-lite function works but I can't seem to get "shadow" to work. :-\
HEY! Come back here!
That's better.  I can change the size and the font and the color.

I still need to figure out the flash and image thingees.

I, too, need to try the tools . . . let try this . . . . and this   . . . .and this  . .  AND THIS
But is this icon for "font change" working?  Appearently not    :-[

What's this?  Oh, now I get it. Cute.

And this?  Ok, but where and how do I use it?  Hmmm.   ???

Ric, you're right . . . flash and shadow don't work.    But glow works fine by re-typing the color in the code brackets.

How about linking to Photobucket?  That's what we do on all the car sites I visit.

Photobucket works.

And Picasa.

I think you just need a valid URL to some photo that is publicly available.

Ric, you're right . . . flash and shadow don't work.  ...

Enabling embedded flash poses a security risk.

For now, let's stick with the more secure setting.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to have a "FORUM" link in the TIGHAR home page instrument icon set.

Yes, it is possible to go straight to the forum.

The link is https://tighar.org/smf/index.php.

Whether Pat wants to design an instrument for that link is a different question that I cannot answer.   ;)
