Several nights ago as I was watching the movie "Castaway" with Tom Hanks...you see him as a castaway trying to start a fire using the very old methods of starting a fire. As I was watching this it had me wandering on this and please help me out if I missed anything since the recent expeditions..but do we know the breakdown composition of campfires that were started there on  Niku or are they indeed man-made from old fashion methods? Let's say for example fuel that might have been used by the crew from the Norwich City or fuel from the Electra or flints and magnifying glass. I am curious to know this as it would give us a better understanding on how these fires were made.

This was a time in our history when seemingly everyone carried lighters or matches so I have to believe Earhart and Noonan had them too. Amelia was not a smoker and not much evidence that Fred was either but like a pocket knife it seemed like something to have handy.

Actually, we do know that Fred was a smoker.  Somewhere back in the 1990's, there was a discussion about this...
