Title: Where is the diary that Gallagher kept on Niku?
Post by: Martin X. Moleski, SJ on August 03, 2009, 09:02:16 AM
We know that Gallagher kept a diary as part of his official responsibilities as an officer of the Western Pacific High Commission. (http://tighar.org/wiki/WPHC)

The diary should give details about the thorough search Gallagher did on Nikumaroro. (http://tighar.org/wiki/Bones_found_on_Nikumaroro)

We're actually not entirely sure that Gallagher kept a diary.  We know that District Officers were required to keep diaries, and we understand that these were regarded as government property and hence presumably turned in to be filed.  Gallagher wasn't exactly a District Officer, but he was performing the same functions (and then some), so it's a safe bet he had to keep a diary, but we don't know for sure that he did.  What's mysterious is that we haven't found ANY DO's diary in any of the archives, which suggests (to me at least) that they're filed someplace we haven't looked, perhaps under a title that doesn't shout "District Officer Diaries" at the searcher.

Gallagher filed quarterly reports, and these we do have, but the diary remains a mystery.  It's one of many things we'd like to look for in Honiara, if we can ever get someone there to look.  Tarawa also still remains a possibility.
