This shows what a quoted section looks like in a reply.

This is a posting test post.

A member said something wasn't working.

<sigh>

As always, everything works for me.  So far as I know, you can't squish a bug you can't see.

I think this post on "How to Post to the Forum" (https://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,211.msg1606.html#msg1606) has the basic information you seek.

The button for "New Topic" disappears when you are reading a thread because the authors of the FREE software we use decided to make it disappear when you are inside of a thread.

You have choices.  You may rewrite the software (as it is open-source).  You may harass the authors (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/copyright.php) and see whether they will modify it to suit you.  Or you may pay TIGHAR's expenses to install the software of your choice; plan on making a large donation not just to cover the cost of acquiring and installing the software, but also to make TIGHAR feel that the work is worth the effort.   ::)  Your last option is to learn how this package works and cope with its limitations.  For the most part, that is the path I've taken myself.   ;)

Any others you can think of?

I've pinned five or six topics (https://tighar.org/smf/index.php/board,1.0.html) in the "Forum FAQs, maintenance, how-to help" board.

Quote
Oh, I remember you told someone how to get rid of the Security information Popup that is so annoying.

Yes.  I just pinned that one, but I plan to rework the Forum so that it is no longer using https:// in the URLs.  We were obliged to implement that in order to pass some tests that are no longer required or run on the site.

Quote
And why did the main page change?

Pat Thrasher takes care of http://tighar.org and many hundreds of other pages on the site.  I didn't ask and she didn't tell me why she modified her templates.  I did help her find a few missing links, if I remember correctly.

And another thing, You're doing a GREAT job

I appreciate the kind words.  Some days are better than others.   ;D

I'm glad it's starting to make sense, Mike.  Feel free to practice in the Chatterbox.  You can start a new topic (as I did this one) and reply to yourself to see what the various options are.

I have three hours of heavy reading left, then I have to calculate the grades and turn them in by 9:00 AM tomorrow, so I'll have to be brief in any replies I make tonight.

Yup. If you want to have the image in the post rather than as an attachment, you need to upload it first, then use the URL of the uploaded image to get it into your post.

Well, C+ at this point. Figured out quote insert and image insert relative to attaching one image. Is it possible to attach--import--more than one image, and might you direct me to the relevant info?

There is a limit of four attachments per post.  When you click on the plus sign next to the words "Attachments and other options," you will see a note that says "Restrictions: 4 per post."  Just above that is a link that says "(more attachments)."  After browsing to the first file you want to attach to your post, click on that link, and a new input box and browse button will appear.

I don't know what the limit is when you insert images directly into your post (http://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,128.0.html).  I know that things can go sour if one of the images is too big.  It would be wise to use modestly-sized images, as a general rule.

Well, I can't give you full marks.   ;)

The URL did show up.  But it's more helpful if you provide some descriptive anchor text as the link rather than the URL itself.

E.g., Amelia Earhart: The Price of Courage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7aMcDeuQ8I).

It's exactly the same link, but more human-friendly to use English words as the "anchor text."

Marty,

When ever I insert a hyperlink in a block of text, I always preview the post and click on the highlighted text in the preview pane to see if my hyperlink goes where I want it to.  You might want to add this tip to the end of the tutorial.  I have had to correct some for posters that were broken links, just didn't work or the wrong one.

Bob, you can add this is the thread yourself.  It's open for comments and suggestions.  Or, using your superpowers as a moderator, you should be able to modify the opening post and add the suggestion in your own name.

Edit: I just realized that I have a hidden agenda here.  From my point of view, the job of moderators is to lighten the work load of admins.  Verbum sat sap. :P

Yes.  This Google search of the TIGHAR website for "Mili Atoll" (http://www.google.com/cse?cx=009580785602718212762%3Anmcmqnbv5de&ie=UTF-8&q=%22mili+atoll%22+randall&sa=Search&siteurl=www-open-opensocial.googleusercontent.com%2Fgadgets%2Fifr%3Furl%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252Fcoop%252Fapi%252F009580785602718212762%252Fcse%252Fnmcmqnbv5de%252Fgadget%26container%3Dopen%26view%3Dhome%26lang%3Dall%26country%3DALL%26debug%3D&ref=tighar.org%2Fnews%2Fhelp%2F82-how-do-i-search-tigharorg&ss=4944j2067734j22#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=%22mili%20atoll%22%20) returns nine pages of hits.  It's been discussed a few times.   ::)

Looks like I only did some good on part of my test.  still need some work on the research.  ;D  I DID check the atoll - found Japanese occupation - all kinds of stuff that crashed there.  I need better search technics.  :(

P.S. I've looked over all "nine pages of hits".  A LOT of reading!  "Everything under the sun" - hardly anything about the subject Mili Atoll - actually not a lot more that I found.  Still some interesting reading.

Monte, when you are on this page, the Forum, if you scroll to the top you will see a list of topics across the top. If you click on the second one from the left, "Search TIGHAR", it will take you to the page to find things. It has instructions, topics and a place to enter the subject you want to explore. When you finish, if you are not on the "Search TIGHAR" page, use your return arrow to get there, then go to the options at the top, click on Forum and you will return here.

I hope you are ready to do a lot of reading. Have fun! ;)

Woody, yes, I've done that, but the "nine pages of hits" took going directly to Google - and the results were mostly related to TIGHER in this case.  When I did as you mention, the results come back as yellow highlights in forum threads. Not nearly as many results.  Also,  to get stuff back in the TIGHER Tracks era seems to require the Google approach - that's just my observation, but maybe I'm doing it wrong.
Title: Re: Test post
Post by: C.W. Herndon on August 24, 2012, 07:09:00 PM
Monte, it has been my experience that if you type your subject in the search box at the upper right of this page then you get the yellow, high-lighted posts on the Forum.

Are you using the "Search TIGHAR" feature at the very top of the page next to the TIGHAR logo. When you use the search box on that page it uses a "special Google search", looks like it too, but it does mostly take you to references on the TIGHAR Web Site. When you try to go to page 2 of the list be careful because there is an "ASK" search button right next to the google next page button. I have accidently hit the "ASK" search button many times. Don't care for it much. :-[

If this doesn't help, let me know.

The link I gave you to the nine pages of results was generated from using the Google box found on the TIGHAR search page (http://tighar.org/news/help/82-how-do-i-search-tigharorg).  I figured I would save you a step and just give you the result without explaining how I got it.

My bad.

Quote

No, that is a different search function.  That is the internal SMF search.  The button--or "tab"--that you're looking for is labeled "Search TIGHAR."  It is just under the TIGHAR logo at the top left corner of the page.  If you only see something labeled "Search," you haven't found what Woody is talking about.

Oh, drat.  It's more complicated than that.  I started a tutorial on how to search (http://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,580.0.html), but I see it needs work.  There are two routes into the Forum's internal search functions, as well as the big button/tab under the logo.

Quote

You are correct.  If you use the Forum's internal search functions, you only search the Forum.

To search the rest of the website, use the TIGHAR-search box on the search page (http://tighar.org/news/help/82-how-do-i-search-tigharorg).

1. I don't know.  Various times have been suggested over the years, I believe.  I don't think TIGHAR has published the tide tables it has developed in full.

2. Questions like this should go in the General Discussion Forum.  It's hard to have thread drift in the Chatterbox, but I think you've succeeded.   ;D
