Title: How to pronounce "Hoodless"?
Post by: Brian Tannahill on December 19, 2016, 08:43:07 PM
Do we know how Dr. Hoodless said his last name?

Some British names are pronounced in non-obvious ways.  Taliaferro is pronounced Toliver, Cholmondely is Chumley,  Bagehot is Badge-it, St. John is Sinjen.  And there's Worcestershire.

My first guess would be to say Hood-less.  I have no idea if that's right.

Cf. ProunounceWiki, Elizabeth Hoodless. (http://www.pronouncekiwi.com/Elisabeth%20Hoodless)

Seems straightforward.

Eric Bevington corrected my pronunciation of Gallagher.  "Gerald always pronounced his name GALaher."

Scots Gaelic is worse.  Ghilleaspuig is pronounced Gillespie.

Speaking as a Brit, I would say Hoodless is pronounced just as it's spelt.
