Has there ever been any suspision about the timing  and cause of death on record of   Gerald  Gallagher . Were his remains cremated when  reburried on Tarawa?   Hilary

No.  His final hours (http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Documents/MacPhersons_Report.html) were witnessed by many of his shipmates and friends.

That is unlikely, but I have not seen the correspondence about the translation of his remains from Niku to Tarawa.  He was a Catholic and cremation was forbidden to Catholics until after Vatican II.

Gallagher died in Septemcer . This report of findings was written in November ...The interval seems long but was that the norm then?

My thoughts were on how he became ill.

Gallagher died in September.

September of 1941.

I see his work being done in October, 1940 (http://tighar.org/wiki/Bones)--eleven months before his death.

So far as I know, there was no posthumous report form him.

It appears to have been gastric trouble of some kind--perhaps the cumulative effects of eating food that didn't agree with him or some other kind of infection.  When they did the surgery on him, it was clear that his intestines were irreparably damaged.

Could be this that you are thinking of?

Ah--thanks, Chris.  I thought the other poster meant that the report on Gallagher's findings about the bones was two months after his death.  I see that the complaint is that MacPherson's report on Gallagher's death is two months afterward.

Yes, that is perfectly normal.  MacPherson was riding the boat around the islands and had other responsibilities.  He would almost certainly not have filed the report while on the boat and probably didn't even compose it on the boat.

Glad to be of service, i've read and re read so much stuff but thankfully it kind of sticks in my mind.

Your right, having read about PISS they did spend quite a lot of time island hoping and though there were radios on the islands they were a luxury to be used sparingly (sp).
