Title: Zero Tolerance for Trolls
Post by: Ric Gillespie on March 04, 2013, 02:10:27 PM
Ancient charts often bore the warning "Hic Sunt Dracones" (Here Be Dragons).  Users of this forum are cautioned Hic Sunt Trollanes (Here Be Trolls).
TIGHAR welcomes reasoned debate and fact-based criticism but it is a sad fact of life that popular forums like this one inevitably attract a few individuals who get their kicks by being disruptive - arguing absurd points of evidence just to clutter the discussion or sow dissension.  Trolls, when unmasked and banned, often return under aliases and will even masquerade under multiple names and engage in conversations with themselves so as to create the impression of consensus on some ridiculous allegation or criticism.

In the past, TIGHAR has largely ignored trolls who return under false names, allowing them to think their game is undiscovered and banning them only when they revert to their old ways - but no more.  Our time, and your time, is too valuable to waste. Henceforth, trolls will be banned without warning as soon as they are discovered.

These disruptions result in inaccurate information, animosity, hurt feelings and does not represent the forum in a positive way to new comers who may want to contribute. You never know, one of those new comers may hold the key to the smoking gun or smoking landing gear or...

Thank you Dave. Actually, this will be a net savings in time and effort.

Indeed!  For all of us...

Ric and Admin team;
I have long been impressed by the reasoned, informed debate as well as dissenting opinion welcomed to the forum.  Tough to filter the trolls without being accused of censoring dissent but it has to be done; trust that we know the difference.  Keep up the good work.

The accusations will come, no doubt, but yes, we trust the forum to appreciate the difference between reasoned dissent and willful disruption.

Now ... if only we could have something like this in academia at times ...

But then, why spoil all the nail-biting excitement?
