It's a good article.  Other media are picking it up and adding their own spin.

http://time.com/3904595/amelia-earhart-flight-history-disappearance-cruise-pacific-ocean/

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/is-this-the-uninhabited-pacific-island-where-amelia-earhart-spent-her-last-moments/ar-BBkyAKx

They seem to be assuming that the tourist cruise will be there for the entire expedition.  In fact, there's only a day and half overlap at the very end.

Another small web-based news site, Clapway (a multi-platform media company headquartered in Brooklyn, NY) has its story about Niku VIII (http://clapway.com/2015/06/04/nikumaroro-island-getting-close-to-finding-amelia-earhart-234/).

The satellite photo of a Pacific atoll in the article is immediately seen by any TIGHAR member to not be Niku. Oh, well -- an atoll is an atoll is an atoll -- they all look alike, right?

How soon before someone posts exactly which island it really is. Hint: North is to the left.

Marakei, North Gilbert Islands, Kiribati. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marakei)

I would have discovered this sooner, but I had a long talk with my Mom, full of laughter and happy memories.  ;D

Nice priority in that, Marty, good to hear!

I have been listening to the news from Radio Australia and Radio New Zealand but I have heard nothing about the TIGHAR expedition. Both stations give news about happenings in the Pacific islands. Apparently both stations don't think the TIGHAR expedition is a newsworthy event.

Not necessarily. They may not know about it...

Another story that just came out.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/searching-earhart-lifes-quest-doubters-31743415?singlePage=true

Less glowing than others, but certainly provides more context on the state of the Earhart search.

What's the story behind TIGHAR's "state tax delinquency in Delaware for more than $55,000"?

What's the story behind TIGHAR's "state tax delinquency in Delaware for more than $55,000"?

The article seems to give the story: "Now Mellon has filed a complaint with the IRS, claiming that TIGHAR is violating nonprofit guidelines. Already, public records show Gillespie has a state tax delinquency in Delaware for more than $55,000 — an amount Gillespie's wife and TIGHAR co-founder, Pat Thrasher, says they're working to pay back after getting into debt to pay for a defense in the Mellon lawsuit."

Ummm, maybe I'm missing something, but how does being in debt from a lawsuit result in not paying your taxes? Seems like taxes are one of the first expenses one would pay to avoid even worse problems.

I am not on the Board.

I do not speak for the Board.

I do not have any access to TIGHAR's balance sheets.

I do not know what the cash flow looked like when the taxes were due.

I do not know when court costs were incurred and when various bills fell due.

I do not know when the anonymous benefactor met the last of the court debts.

Stuff happens.

I imagine that the Board concurs with Ric and Pat, as quoted in the article, that they will pay the taxes as soon as possible.

It does.....and we deal with it and move forward.  I believe we should look for the best in people (i.e.: taxes can be rough and we all do our best, Pat and Ric included).  The media rarely has anyone's best interests or welfare at heart.

Onward and upward!

The AP article has been picked up all over the place, but here is a longer version than ABC News carried.

http://www.sfgate.com/news/us/article/Searching-for-Earhart-is-his-life-s-quest-6325317.php

I think it's a pretty good piece that really covers a lot of ground, including a topic I've been interested in of just how TIGHAR was started and why. It also reveals the heretofore unknown tax delinquency, which may shed light on the odd changes in scope and financing during the many months of Niku VIII planning. The story also provides good balance in describing the cases for and against the Gardner Island theory with brief mentions of and links to rival explanations of Earhart's fate. Author Martha Irvine appears to have done much more thorough research and provided a more comprehensive overview of the complex Earhart saga than the average news writer.

Plus the quote about "No apologies for my charisma" sounds like classic Ric Gillespie!

What is "the tourist cruise" all about?  Time Magazine reports that "up to 68 passengers" have paid $11,000 each to accompany the expedition aboard a cruise ship.  As a poster above has pointed out, they are referring to some cruise ship that will overlap with the expedition for a day and a half at the end of the expedition's stay on the island, so apparently Time is exaggerating something.

Is it a regularly scheduled cruise that as a bonus will provide its passengers with a peek at the expedition's work, or something like that?
