Japan WW2 soldier who refused to surrender Hiroo Onoda dies (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-25772192)

I first read his book, "No Surrender" in the late 70's and was in awe of his determination and resourcefulness. Although I knew he was getting up there in age, it still is saddening to hear of his passing. A true Japanes Icon.

Determined and resourceful he may have been, but most would
probably question his common sense.

I believe he killed a number of innocent civilians during the years of his one-man war, too.
Hiding out and refusing to surrender is a noble delusion.
When it leads to murder, it seems a whole lot less honorable to me.
