If you're wondering why I have been uncharacteristically quiet of late, this breaking news (http://tighar.org/Moving/moving.html) will explain what has kept me occupied.
-
Great news!!!
-
Outstanding! How did you ever get along in the old quarters?!
-
Congratulations! The new place looks nice and roomy! :)
-
WOW! That house looks HUGE!!
Home of the future TIGHAR Bed and Breakfast? ;)
Congratulations!
-
Or Home for the Electra 8)
-
And a new telephone number ending in "1937" --- nice touch.

Home of the future TIGHAR Bed and Breakfast? ;)
3,600 sq. feet. Certainly the home of future TIGHAR gatherings.
The central core of the house dates from the early 19th or possibly even late 18th century (research needed). The original kitchen has a pot hook and warming oven in the fireplace. There is a "suppressed staircase" leading to the room above that has exposed beams fastened with wooden pegs. The floor joists in the basement are rough=hewn timbers. A larger kitchen and a third story were added some time later. We're not sure just when but the "new" kitchen also has a fireplace. Mid-to-late 19th century?
Roughly 15 years ago an addition was added (the left-hand half of the house in the attached photo) that includes a dining room, a family room (with built-in bar), a large outdoor deck, and a master bedroom on the second floor.
Until the office space in the barn is finished, TIGHAR will occupy the dining room and family room (and built-in bar ;D).

Allllllllllllll righty then!
Now it's up to us to make sure there's something nice in the Christmas stockings over the fireplace.

Thanks Monty. Did I mention that moving is EXPENSIVE?
-
and it looks like you'll get plenty of "lawn maintenance therapy"....judging from the aerial pics, you've got quite a lawn to mow !!
Congrats on the find Ric.....enjoy the "breathing room".....lots of potential there for future TIGHAR endeavors.
-
Ric has natural lawn mowers, i.e., horses, and I forsee a herd of goats in his future ;D
Actually, moving is not only expensive, it's about as much fun as clearing a minefield with a stick, at night, in the rain.

Yikes! Now a moving fund? There gonna to be enough donations leftover for Niku VIII and legal defense? Where's this money going to come from? Just a little flustered.
-
If its not too rude to ask is this a TIGHAR purchase or a Family Purchase, just wondering based on the small chance that Mr Mellon wins his court case and then how it might effect the new TIGHAR central.

Wilkum to Pennsylvania TIGHAR !! :)
-

Neither. A TIGHAR member has purchased the property and is leasing it to me and Pat. TIGHAR sublet's from us just as it does now. After five years we buy the property at a pre-negotiated price. The Mellon suit is not an issue. The lower overhead resulting from not having to rent storage space and having room to grow the organization should enhance, not detract from, fundraising for TIGHAR projects. This move is a win-win (but it's still expensive).
-
Thanks Ric! Hope the move goes well, where do I send my CV for a job? ;)

Should the CV to be sent with cover letter and transcript(s)?
Thanks,

P.S.--The new place looks fabulous--genuine history and a beautiful setting!

I trust that there won't be too many advserse tax consequences with the move, with Delaware being so business-friendly and Pennsylvania ... not so much.

In google maps it looks like beautiful country, but what is that A shaped marking in the ground behind the house?

Once Tighar raises the necessary funding to get there I guess we'll find out.

The A site?

TIGHAR is a tax exempt 501c3 organization. The tax situation in PA will be no different than in DE except for sales tax. Delaware has no sales tax.

It's a good example of how deceiving aerial photos can be. The is no A-shaped feature. There is a big piece of a tree that was once there and some bare dirt where the stump was.
-
Once Tighar raises the necessary funding to get there I guess we'll find out.
Money contributed toward the move will be used only to help pay for moving TIGHAR assets and no contributions earmarked for other purposes (Niku VIII, Legal Defense, Devastator Project, etc.) will be used to pay for the move. Needless to say, Pat and I will bear the entire cost of moving our personal stuff.
-
What are the internal and International air links like if you plan to host conferences and the such like. Also hotels etc..
Its not to rural for an international organisation?

That's the great thing about the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania. It's a beautiful rural setting but we'll only be about an hour from Philadephia Int'l Airport (PHL) and 40 minutes from the Wilmington AMTRAK station. There's a good hotel about 10 minutes away.
-
That's good to know, obviously a better option that renting some kind of unit in an urban setting and being able to host TIGHARS own conferences and expo's is a good revenue stream.

Sounds good! When I saw the image of the new place, the first thing that came to mind was "wow, that place looks like a perfect home for a future AE museum, complete with recovered Electra parts from Nikumaroro." Maybe even an entire room dedicated to failed lawsuits against Tighar. Attic maybe?

I think it can be more than that. With the right development it will be the physical manifestation of the TIGHAR ethic.

When the time comes, recovered Electra parts and Earhart personal artifacts will belong in a much more public and accessible facility. We need to give some serious thought to what The TIGHAR Center for Aviation History should be and do.

Hi All
Finding Amelia is on tonight at 12:00 am on Discovery channel
For UK folk that is
Thanks Richie

Great news Richie.
I bought the DVD from Tighar.
It lives in my DVD player and gets regularly started and stopped so I can watch segments iteratively.

Actually you got the DVD for free as a benefit of being a TIGHAResearcher.

No sales tax in Delaware. Right! I knew that. Didn't I? *goes back to muttering about the Infernal Revenue Service*

We've always welcomed visitors but there was never much to visit. At this new property we hope to create space and facilities that TIGHAR members can use for meetings, conferences and research. Some time in the spring, when we've had a chance to settle in and the weather is better, we should have a TIGHAR Gathering to introduce everyone to the new headquarters and discuss its potential - not to mention throwing one hell of a party. Sound like a good idea?

... not to mention throwing one hell of a party. Sound like a good idea?
If there are enough porta-potties, bottles of water, and tents where folks on bad trips can quietly return to reality. ::)

You have experience with "retreats". We'll value your advice. Why am I flashing on an old 19th century campground religious meeting?
-
*starts humming, Gimme that Old Time Religion*
I'm not averse to sleeping on the ground, but at my age I don't feel like lying and say I like it ;D

Or maybe "Tenting on the old campground."
Actually, we're only a few miles from Newark, DE - a college town (U of D). Lots of hotels.
-
Just need enough room for the tent, a small campfire and a place for the dog to sniff around and we're set. ;)
-
"Bottles of water"??? Not hardly! Bottles....yes.
-
I hope that all went well with The Great TIGHAR Relocation of 2014, and that not too many things got lost in the shuffle.

The move went smoothly despite the weather. Just got the computers on line this afternoon. Fantastic cable signal. Faster than we has "in town." Of course, we're still buried in boxes (now which box did I put that in?) but we'll get it all sorted out.
