Title: 2015 TIGHAR Tracks
Post by: Ric Gillespie on November 10, 2015, 08:41:39 AM
We're about to go to press with the 2015 edition of TIGHAR Tracks.  The 60-page print version will be mailed to TIGHAR members next week.  Members who have requested the PDF version will get theirs sooner.
Here's what you'll find inside:

Thanks for the heads up, Ric!  I can't wait.  I hope that sending a .pdf version saves a good amount of money.

I hope you just send a link to the new TIGHAR Tracks PDF, and not some very large file attachment.

My email inbox choaks on attachments that are multi-megabyte in size.

What Bruce said. A link would be marvelous. Otherwise I'll end up spending an hour or more on line with my internet provider's misnamed customer assistance.

We'll probably put the PDF in TIGHAR's Dropbox and send a link.  That has worked well with other large files.

The current plan is to include a link to the TIGHAR Tracks PDF in a TIGHARNews email that will go only to those of you who have requested the PDF.  Downloading the PDF should not be a problem even if your regular email won't support large attachments. If you do have a problem just let me know and we'll Dropbox the PDF to you.

That should work. Have we had a good response to the E-Tracks initiative?

Super response.  Over 200 members want the PDF and requests are still coming in.

So far nearly 300 TIGHAR members have requested a PDF rather than a printed version of the 2015 issue of TIGHAR Tracks.  The link to the download will go out on Monday.
We delivered the digital file of the printed version to the printer yesterday and we should have a proof copy in hand tomorrow.  If everything looks in order we'll give them a green light and we'll have the final product here on Tuesday and Wednesday ready to start mailing.

Did the printed versions all get mailed out? I only ask as I haven't received my copy yet here in Michigan. Let me know if I should flog the postal department for poor performance!

The printed versions went to the Post Office yesterday (Monday). First Class mail, $2.74 each.  $2,200 for the whole mailing.  Ouch!  If you don't have it by Friday let me know.

So the "Tracks" shows up in our mailbox yesterday, and my hubby hasn't had his nose out of it since! :o

That's sort of the idea.

Thanks for adding this publication to the TIGHAR Tracks online. I noticed a couple broken links that I thought you should know about.  Volume 29, #3 June 2013 and Volume 30, #1 May 2014 are missing and both link to Volume 29, #2 May 2013.

Volume 29, #3 June 2013 is not missing.
The link to Volume 30, #1 May 2014 was broken. It is now fixed.  Thanks.

and both link to Volume 29, #2 May 2013.

Not sure what you mean.  The link to Volume 29, #2 May 2013 works just fine.

When I looked earlier, the links for multiple issues were pointing to the May 2013 issue.  Now they all appear to be working correctly.  Thank you!

Ric,

In the 2-2-V-1 section of the recent TIGHAR Tracks, you included a closeup photo of the lavatory window patch from the Darwin ramp refueling photo.  The patch is outlined in red and a yellow arrow points to the rear edge of the patch.  The caption for this image states:

The Darwin refueling photo reveals that sometime between Bandoeng (June 21) and Port Darwin (June 28) the patch had begun to distort or "oil can."  Purdue Earhart Collection, used by permission.

Could you clarify exactly what the yellow arrow is pointing to, where you see distortion of the metal of the patch?  I assume it is pointing to the slightly darker (compared to the rest of the patch), slightly curved, concave side up, thick "line" running across the patch from back to front.  Is this correct?

I would describe it as more of a depression, wrinkle, or dent.  It happens to match a similar deformation in the artifact.
