Special website for the Symposium (http://www.earhartsearch75.com/). Update 15 April: program complete.
Help wanted: Please circulate attached .pdf to anyone who might be interested in attending the Conference. Thanks!
June 1st of his year will be the 75th anniversary of Amelia Earhart's departure from the U.S. on her ill-fated world flight. On June 1, 2, & 3 (Fri., Sat., Sun.) TIGHAR will host Earhart Search 75, a three-day conference/symposium to explain, discuss and debate what has been learned in three-quarters of a century of efforts to discover the fate of America's favorite missing person. Researchers, scientists, historians, archaeologists, and forensic experts will present their findings on a wide range of topics in support of a variety of theories. The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum's Senior Curator of Aeronautics, Dr. Tom D. Crouch will be our keynote speaker. The conference will be held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wasgw-crystal-gateway-marriott/) in Arlington, VA - just across the Potomac from Washington, DC. Terrific convention facility, terrific location, close to Washington National Airport, easily accessible by car and Metro.
Details of the program, the presenters, and the pricing are available on the dedicated website for the Symposium (http://www.earhartsearch75.com/). We are ready to start accepting registrations.
-
I too will make plans to attend

We're just finishing up the dedicated Earhart Search 75 website. Should be up and running Monday.
-
any chance of making a dvd of this event and sell it or included in researchers membership material??

Maybe. Too early to say for sure.
-
I would love to be able to purchase a copy, if available, since I cannot get to the symposium (from Hawaii, too $$). But I SO wanted to be there! The work y'all are doing is fabulous and I am following each new bit of information avidly. Keep it up! (I will become a member very soon)

What would be an interesting idea would be a live webcast of the event for those of us that cannot make it. A reasonable fee could be charged to cover the costs.
-
If I did the Lotto and won it i'd be there. Unfortunatly you have to be in it to win it and i'd rather put my £ to better use. So I can't be there but at the right price would love the chance to buy a DVD of the main event.
Poll time for forum memebrs! Would you buy a DVD of the key points?
-
Chris. I would buy a DVD and I plan to attend! I also think the video feed would be excellent. My son attended a gaming convention in California one year. It wasn't cheap. The last two years he has bought the video feed. Even he says it was just as good and way, way cheaper. It would be an excellent way for many members to attend. However it does reduce the attendance and that hurts.

Do conference attendees get a special room rate at the hotel?
Yes. We'll have those details on the website soon.

All right, people, we all know we can talk the talk - in here.
Now it's time to do a little walkin'. I'm signed up for a jaunt to DC the first weekend in June for some serious Amelia and Fred discussin'. Who's with me?

several of us have verbally committed---but it would be nice to have some details. There is supposed to be some breaking news coming out ahead of the symposium.
-
I think this might be the breaking news?....
The US State department will be having a live press briefing on AE tomorrow morning Tuesday 9am.

Sounds big...saw the report on MSNBC...and then the landing page at State's website.
Talk about calling in the heavy artillery...the federal government could really provide a lot of muscle for a deep water search.
If NUMA gets involved, this could be the best Cussler novel yet...
-
Oh, here's two key snippets from the WSJ:
"The impetus for the latest expedition is a recently discovered photo, apparently taken near Nikumaroro just months after Ms. Earhart's disappearance. Some experts believe it may show a portion of the plane's landing gear."
I take it this is above and beyond the photo we're all familiar with.
" Nonetheless, anticipated participation Tuesday by Secretary Clinton and other dignitaries suggests the photo has changed the debate. Along with representatives of the search team, renowned undersea explorer Robert Ballard is expected to express his support for the new effort. Mr. Ballard has spent decades recovering relics and finding wrecks, including the passenger liner Titanic, the German battleship Bismarck and President John F. Kennedy's PT-109 patrol boat.
The State Department said it is "working closely" with Mr. Ballard in what will be a sophisticated sonar search."
Well if Ballard is involved, then if there's anything to find, it will be found!
Can't wait to hear the press conference...

0900 Eastern? Standard? Daylight Saving? 0600 PDT her on the Best Coast.
Photo analysis of Nessie?
-
The ironic thing about this is that 'Nessie' was under TIGHARS nose for ages!
-
Had to re read as I missed the Bob Ballard bit. If that is true and happens then that is exciting news.
Role on July
Just a shame we can't put a team on the island to do some more digging (however if the gun smokes then the island is likely to be picked over with more resources)
-
wow--I was awaken from a sound sleep by my phone---a cousin was letting me know of this. OK Ric---remind me not to play poker with you! Huge coupe to get the state dept involved. Very cool!
Tom
-
The ironic thing about this is that 'Nessie' was under TIGHARS nose for ages!
I think the Nessie we know today WAS discovered in a later less / uncropped version of the photo - seems like the first photo TIGHAR had did NOT include the detail so it was a more recent discovery, unless my memory is failing me.
TIGHAR jumped onto it once they were aware of the feature so I don't think Ric, Jeff Glickman, etc. were ever asleep on this.
Maybe a picture is worth a thousand words after all...

probably a real bad time to ask this---since everyone is really busy, BUT--is there a tenative starting time for the symposium on Friday? For some of us, it may make the differencein flyig in on Thursday note, or friday morning.

You may skip as much of the conference as you wish.
The special conference website (http://www.earhartsearch75.com/index.html) has a page about the conference (http://www.earhartsearch75.com/about.html) that suggests that the program begins Friday afternoon and ends at Sunday noon: "Presentations and panel discussions on Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning on a wide range of topics relating to Amelia Earhart, her place in history and legend, and the mystery of her disappearance."
-
This is just phenomenal news, folks. I have been shouting it out at work, at home--maybe I'll take to the streets today, lol! Really, really incredible development. So thrilled.
Does anyone else find the timing of State's involvement rather humorously ironic...given our recent announcement of the US military's "return to the Pacific?" Echoes of the past, but then, the past is always echoing and sometimes we just notice.
At any rate, I can't wait for more news...looking greatly forward to watching the conference (or attending if I get very lucky!! Have a wedding coming up...wonder how hubby would feel about switching my honeymoon request from "Santa Fe" to "Earhart Conference," lol!)
-
The ironic thing about this is that 'Nessie' was under TIGHARS nose for ages!
Is it the "Nessie-photo" or something else? Was the "new" photo released to public? Where can I see it?
-
Not a new photo, but a re-analysis of an old photo, particularly the part that was cropped when Ric converted it to digital. At the time, we were trying to analyze the Norwich City which is on the right side of the photo, while the "Nessie" object is on the left side.
Here are the two reports that have been written on this photo.
http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Archives/Research/Bulletins/57_Bevingtonphoto/57_HidinginSight.htm (http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Archives/Research/Bulletins/57_Bevingtonphoto/57_HidinginSight.htm)
http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Archives/Research/Bulletins/58_NessieHypothesis/58_NessieHypothesis.htm (http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Archives/Research/Bulletins/58_NessieHypothesis/58_NessieHypothesis.htm)
I'm sure there will be an update on the forensic analysis that has been done.
Andrew
-
Andrew,
thank you very much for linking the "Nessie" and information. :) Well, I can hardly believe that "Nessie" should be actually the landing gear and tire. It's an old case, why was the re-analysis done now? Is there much more to see by now? Why is it now a "Smoking gun?"
Oskar
-
The re-analysis was started in 2010 before our last trip out there. Jeff Glickman noticed that there was something in the photo that we had not noticed before - mostly because we had been looking at a cropped version - so nobody saw it.
I don't know, but I have to assume that the folks at the State Dept who were tasked with reviewing this photo came to the same conclusion as Jeff Glickman's analysis, namely that the object in the photo was consistent with an Electra landing gear. I don't have any details about how this was accomplished, but it was enough to convince folks at the State Dept, and Dr. Ballard that there was enough in this evidence to support our plan for a deep water search off Niku.
No doubt, more info will be coming from Ric about how all this came together, so stay tuned. I'm sure there will be huge discussion at the symposium, which promises to be an incredible event.
see you there.
amck
-
Is there any way I could convince one of you pilots out there to give me a ride to the symposium?? Oh yeah, I live in Hawaii - but no worries, I'll buy gas! ;D (I'm sure that bill would eclipse even a first-class ticket to Virginia!)
LTM,

When Ric & CO board the ship in Hawaii---you can find out first hand whats going on!
Yep round trip from HNL to DCA would be steep.

I would love to attend the symposium but please just promise me that Hillary won't be there.
Politics aside, which, correct me if I'm wrong, really have no bearing on the topic at hand, we need to remember she's on our side in this adventure.
-
For the record:
TIGHAR is, by law and by nature, apolitical. We're an international organization. No place is "overseas" to TIGHAR and you'll never see us refer to "the enemy." I am aware of no political agenda in the State Department's endorsement of our efforts to solve the Earhart riddle.
In the weeks prior to the March 20 event, I spent a great deal of time in Washington with the State Department's Bureau of East Asia & Pacific Islands Affairs. For a while I was jokingly referred to as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Earhart Affairs. It was an incredible opportunity to see a little bit of the internal workings at State and - in a time when government-bashing is popular regardless of party affiliation - I can tell you first hand that the professionals at State are bright, savvy, dedicated and incredibly hard-working. They remind me of our TIGHAR teams. ;D
-
Marty was gracious enough to lead me back to the home page of Niku VII for an answer to a question on another thread. Jeff is right----look at the assets going to Niku. Look at the proposed search plan. Its almost like the heyday of the space race to the moon. The first probes sent to really photograph the moons surface. Like looking at the reef and the ocean bottom at Niku.
Anyone remember where you were on July 20, 1969? I do. I bet I know where alot of us will be when the documentry of this expeditiion airs-----on the edge of my seat, popcorn an a MTN DEW.
-
Now I should stop - Ric's still got to get aboard the KoK in July and I don't want a swollen head to capsize her... ;)
This is where I look down, scuff my foot in the dirt and say, "Aw shucks fellas, I'm just doing my job."
-
I (WE) are proud of you Ric! And proud to be associated with TIGHAR.

I can't find a thread anywhere re: my question so I'll pop it here - sorry if it's in the wrong spot.
Recently seeing Dr. Ballard on TV regarding the Titanic, the subjects of ownership and protection of any wreck located would seem to be a concern. Is anything being done to ensure the protection of the wreck when found? I would be physically ill to see AE's hairpins show up on Ebay. I don't know the sea rules and such so I'm afraid I'm no help. If not started, now would certainly seem to be the time to get whatever pre-work might be needed.
Thoughts?
thanks
Leon
-
Is anything being done to ensure the protection of the wreck when found?
Yes. The Republic of Kiribati asserts ownership of all properties within their national borders. Immediately following the State Department event on March 20, TIGHAR and the Republic of Kiribati signed an Antiquities Management Agreement that makes TIGHAR the exclusive agent for searching, recovering, and conserving all artifacts related to Amelia Earhart within the borders of Kiribati. The high level of U.S. Government interest evident on March 20 insures that if wreckage of the plane is discovered during TIGHAR's July expedition, it will be kept under close surveillance until a recovery expedition can be mounted. It is our hope and intention that any artifacts and/or wreckage confirmed to be related to Earhart, Noonan or the Electra ultimately be exhibited at the Smithsonian National Air 7 Space Museum.
-
Thank you for your reply Ric. I thought as thorough as TIGHAR is this couldn't have been missed, but I still wasn't sleeping well. It is a relief, although pirates will be pirates. You've done what can be done.

In April 2011, David Alan Atcheson posted on the Forum (https://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,352.msg3473.html#msg3473) about his interest in Scuba diving, and a tour group that was advertising a 2012 trip through the Phoenix Islands, including Nikumaroro (which the tour group, Pacific Expeditions, refers to still as Gardner Island). A similar expedition had been advertised to occur about the same time as TIGHAR's Niku VI expedition (http://tighar.org/wiki/Niku_VI_(2010)) in 2010.
Ric responded (http://) about 15 minutes later, noting that the advertised trip had not been properly cleared with authorities, and apparently ended up not visiting Niku. Also, Ric had been in contact with the folks at PIPA about the group's planned visits in the summer of 2011, and it appeared that Pacific Expeditions had subsequently performed the due diligence to obtain the necessary authorizations for its 2011 trip.
Pacific Expeditions Ltd website (http://www.pacific-expeditions.com/voyage_options/phoenix_islands.asp) lists two upcoming planned visits to the Phoenix Islands, including Niku: the first a Scuba diving voyage that runs from 30 May to 15 June, and the second a non-diving voyage that begins 26 June and ends 13 July. Both potential visits would seem to be scheduled to occur before the Niku VII expedition arrives at Niku.

The program for the Symposium has been finalized and published on the Earhart Search 75 (http://www.earhartsearch75.com/index.html) website.
See attached .pdf file for a thumbnail sketch. TIGHAR would be very grateful if you would circulate this to any groups who might be interested.
Breaking news from Ric Gillespie:
"On April 26 Jeff Glickman and I will be at Rhodes House, University of Oxford to get a much better copy of the Bevington photo than we've had to work with to date. Back in 1992, Pat took copy-photos of Bevington's collection when we visited him at his retirement home in the south of England. After Eric died, his papers and photos went to the Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies at Oxford. In 2010, we asked the library to scan the image for us to get better resolution. The best they could do was 600 dpi but that was a big improvement over the copy-photo. Now we've made arrangements for Jeff to get the best image possible with the best available technology. Our hope is that, with a better image, we can show the public what the experts have been seeing. It's one thing to ask people to "take our word for it" that the blob in the photo is the wreckage of an Electra land gear. It's another to be able to show them the tire, the mud flap, the strut, the worm gear, etc. Of course, a better image may show the object to be an abandoned cement mixer, but that's a risk we'll take.
"Whatever we're able to get from the high-resolution image will be revealed for the first time at Jeff's forensic imaging presentation at Earhart Search 75. Feel free to mention all of this when promoting the symposium."
-
Thanks Marty and team. That's really great news. I hope to hear all about it at the symposium.
-
Hope to meet a bunch of you in DC.
Tom
-
Sure wish i could be there but its too far and the wrong time of year for me. IF the event was filmed i would be interested in buying a DVD tough.
-
I would buy a DVD also - would LOVE to go but cannot. Would love to meet you all and have a cold one (or two)..but to all who do attend, have a great time and soak up all the information for us that cannot be there!!
LTM,
Lisa ;D
-
so-----who is signed up?
-
We need to circulate the attached brochure as widely as possible to drum up attendance at the Symposium. It is just a few days away, for all practical purposes, and registration is light.
It will be a great opportunity to interview the people who have built TIGHAR from scratch and who have assembled the world's greatest collection of Earhart information.
Even if you disagree with the TIGHAR team, this is your chance to make your case in person.
I'm excited about the prospect of being there, and I've met most of the presenters through EPAC already. It will be a great event. Even if you can't come yourself, maybe you know someone else who would be interested.
Thanks for your consideration of this request to help get the word out. Very much appreciated.
-
Are there any forum readers in the Toronto Ontario Canada area who are waffling? I would be happy to connect with you and discuss why attending is a good idea. I could even cancel my airfare and drive some interested parties down and back in a van. No cost for the trip down. You're responsible for your registration and hotel. But it would save some money if it helps. Send me a personal message thru the forum. Let's have a big Canadian contingent to show our American friends we care.
-
You guys know what? There is a BUNCH of information here to brush up on before going to DC.
YOu really dont realize just how much information and work has been put into this, until you start studying it -AGAIN---WOW.
Tom
-
One day to go for those of you luckey enough to be attending. Hope you all have a great time. No pressure but DO POST lots for those of us not attending :)
-
Ok guys, make this conference count, you have the publics interest, publicity and press coverage. You have ALL put in a huge amount of work so good luck and best wishes.
-
If anyone attending the conference is interested in taking some time to search the Naval Observatory Records for the numbers on the Sextant Box given to Fred Noonan by Harry Manning, I have the search information from their Archivist. It is what I'd be doing if I was able to attend.
The Naval Observatory was responsible for calibrating Sextants and Octants back then. We know that Harry gave Fred a relatively new model aircraft Octant before the last flight. We also have a record of the numbers on the "Sextant Box" found on Niku. What we don't know is whether the numbers on the Niku "Sextant Box" are the same as the numbers that were on the "Manning" box. The answer is (likely, or maybe only possibly) in the Naval Observatory Records, "1923-1943 (Entry 14 Record Group 78, 103 feet)" and are sub-classified in some way I have not had experience with.
It is a search I plan to undertake the next time I'm on the opposite coast from Washington State, but that might be years from now. Any help would be greatly appreciated by myself, and I'm sure by others as well.
LTM
-
Good luck at the Symposium everybody. Are there any plans for "play by play" posts? I'm sure those attending will be rather busy, but will there be a new thread that gives the highlights?
-
Good morning from Washington. I am planning on "attempting" to do a photo play by play using my camera, my iPad, Picassa web site and hotel Internet.
I hope this won't conflict with anything the organizers are doing. I will post a new topic shortly with the link to the photos.
-
I suppose this means I need to come downstairs ... but then, you'd need to buy a new camera after that one imploded for "unknown reasons."
LTM, who has no illusions,
Monty Fowler, TIGHAR No. 2189 CER
-
Hi Monty. Yes come downstairs. I can always make sure the lens cap is on. I'm having coffee in the Mez restaurant on same level as symposium.
-
The answer is (likely, or maybe only possibly) in the Naval Observatory Records, "1923-1943 (Entry 14 Record Group 78, 103 feet)" and are sub-classified in some way I have not had experience with.

Where exactly are these records supposed to be?
I'm no longer in DC, but if these records are there, we can surely get someone to go look at them.
Andrew

I've enjoyed reading about the symposium this morning - and thank you, Irv, for the pictures! I so wish I could have been there to see all the exhibits (got chills looking at the aluminum pieces) and meet some of you in person.
It makes me look forward to the upcoming expedition and reports form Niku even more.
thanks all for your comments and information!

Hear hear!!! Was a video made of the symposium?
-
Tim---with all the cameras around---I would think so! Might call Pat and ask about it.
-
Thanks, maybe I'll just do that. I would think there could be quite a bit of $$ mileage to be had from a DVD of the proceedings. Next best thing to being there!
-
Was a video made of the symposium?
Every session was taped by a professional producer and TIGHAR member (Mark Smith).
What can or will be done with the tapes remains to be seen.
Pat and Ric are undoubtedly preoccupied at present with the KoK expedition. I don't know whether Mark is going along, but I would be rather surprised if he isn't.
In other words, there may be a DVD some day, but not soon. I suppose that if there is a professional reading this who is willing to donate time to edit the tapes, or if there is a benefactor willing to fund the professional editing of the tapes, that might speed up the process. But if you are, like me, just hoping that someone else will make the investment and do the work, then we will just have to wait with patience until that happens.
You may be sure that if TIGHAR produces a DVD, by one means or another, it will be announced here and elsewhere, more than once. ;D
-
Was that mark that was filming during the 'shark' episode on the reef? If so=wow----
-
just a video i found from june http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nra6r48jdK8

Good video Richie. Thanks for the link.
-
Very interesting comments today in the Niku VII daily report about the previous ROV video. Check it out.
-
can u provide link C.W
-
Here you are Richie.
http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Niku7/niku7dailies2.html
-
It's ok i found link, However i doubt they mean the rov video in forum
they have hours of rov footage of reef to study, so doubt it is clip we have been speculateing about
-
imagine we could view view all rove footage we could probably identify a fleet of planes ;D
-
I think you are probably right about it being video that we have not seen on the Forum. But, I feel sure that they were looking at the entire video, so maybe or maybe not!
-
Ric
Is the kind of person that if he thought any of the rov stuff we have speculated about was the electra wreckage he would put himself in firing line of all the naysayers
Which lead's me to think that there is more obvious components in rest of video footage or they are just trying to identify were rov was at givin time based on sonar data
also u have to remember the outer reef edge is a dangerous place to be so the captain needs to be updated or made aware of possible dangers :)
-
Here's KOK's progress as far as the Equator on 10 July.
-
You would think with today's technology, there would be earth cam's we could log into for real time viewing, i.e see were and what k.o.k is doing ;D
-
i.s.s, orbiting telescopes/satellites :)
-
Lack of news of any activities, developments, progress is a real "buzz-kill", especially with the build-up and anticipation.
-
Thomas
If you haven't been to the daily reports, you should go to
http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Niku7/niku7dailies2.html#n708 (http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Niku7/niku7dailies2.html#n708)
Unfortunately, these expeditions don't happen like Indiana Jones movies, all action - all the time with some romance thrown in.
They tend to be a methodical process of discovery, trial and error, adaptation, and long hours of sometimes mind numbing work. The dailies give us only a few snapshots of what's going on, and we get that only once a day, so everything seems like it is in slow motion.
All that will be wiped away if they find what they are looking for, but we have to give them the time to do their jobs and work the search plan.
Andrew
-
Thank you, Andrew. Good comments, and thanks for the link. The excitement over the date of the arrival and the thirst for info just spilled over a bit especially when I could not find the appropriate link for at least some info. Thanks, again.
-
Although not written specifically about Amelia Earhart every time I listen to this track I can't help thinking it fits. Anyhow, here are the words and a link to the number. The video is dull, there is a better one on youtube but, it has some, how shall we say, naughty scenes near the end and, I don't want to offend the lady forum members.
I got your letter.
Thanks a lot.
I've been getting lots of sun.
And lots of rest.
It's really hot.
Days, I dive by the wreck.
Nights, I swim in the blue lagoon.
Always used to wonder who I'd bring to a desert island.
Days, I remember cities.
Nights, I dream about a perfect place.
Days, I dive by the wreck.
Nights, I swim in the blue lagoon.
Full fathom five thy father lies.
Of his bones are coral made.
Those are pearls that were his eyes.
Nothing of him that doth fade.
But that suffers a sea change.
Into something rich and strange.
And I alone am left to tell the tale.
Call me Ishmael.
I got your letter.
Thanks a lot.
I've been getting lots of sun.
And lots of rest.
It's really hot.
Always used to wonder who I'd bring to a desert island.
Days, I remember rooms.
Nights, I swim in the blue lagoon.
I saw a plane today.
Flying low over the island.
But my mind was somewhere else.
And if you ever get this letter.
Thinking of you.
Love and kisses.
Blue Pacific.
Signing off.
