At long last, after a search that lasted decades and cost millions of dollars, Fred Noonan's bubble octant has been located, and with it, the mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan has been conclusively and irrefutably solved, as the picture below amply demonstrates:

You're welcome.

Bad form, Monty, baaaaad... ::)
-
OMG! Is that the long-lost inverting eyepiece, too?
-
Did Fred need a special eyepiece to see things inverted? ???
Wait a minute... sorry, that's more to do with duplicate images. :P
-
A "bubbly octant." It all makes sense now.
-
;)
Deserved or not, poor Noonan had a bit of a reputation...

This is truly a special instrument. Not only does it take the sun down to the horizon, it takes the navigator down to the horizon as well. All the better to observe the stars. ::)
-
Gives new meaning to the sun being over the yard arm. I think they used to sell these type of sextants by the case....
Where on earth did you find that image? Is there a maker's serial and USNO number?

Unfortunately, Mr. McKenna sir, I was forced to sign a 327-page non-disclosure agreement that included a unique death by evisceration rider, so I am unable to respond to any specific queries. The photo must stand on its own merits and without any additional qualifications, queries or absolutions.
Or something like that.

"...sign a 327-page non-disclosure agreement..."
You joined 'Stratus', and they gave you an artifact of Fred's that Gary had laid back somewhere!!! You DOG! :D
-
Funny you should mention Stratus. I popped over to their website yesterday and it seemed pretty quiet. I assume that means the fundraising is going on in the background.
Even though I think they're wrong, I wish them success - SOMEONE has to wrap this mystery up. Amelia and Fred deserve that.
