Just saw this about a WWII Kittyhawk fighter found in the Sahara (http://worldnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/05/11/11655018-world-war-ii-kittyhawk-fighter-found-in-sahara-shedding-light-on-pilots-fate?lite) and for me it is one example of why we search - whether Earhart or otherwise.
Here is a link to the Vintage Wings of Canada (http://www.vintagewings.ca/VintageNews/Stories/tabid/116/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/357/language/en-CA/Original-Kittyhawk-HS-B-Discovered.aspx) site that has very interesting and detailed coverage.
Maybe others have some favorite examples they'd like to put up here, or offer some of their own reasons as to why a search for historic aviation relics and truths are important to you.

There is already a thread devoted to the P40 Kittyhawk found in the desert (http://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,658.msg12563.html#msg12563). :)
