A number of you said you'd like to look at copies, and I'd treasure your comments. If you want me to send you the PDF, please send me your email addresses. I hope you've all received the PDFs I sent. I'm also hoping you'll send me comments, as critical as appropriate, to TFKing106@aol.com. I've gotten very helpful comments from William Webster-Garman, and plan to start next week making revisions in response, so the sooner I receive everyone else's reaction, the easier it will be for me to profit from your advice. As part of that revision, we are going to discontinue this email forum and move the activity to a web-based message board hosted on the TIGHAR website. There are two reasons for this. The first is that the message board is free, which the Forum is not. The second is that, while the Forum was state-of-the-art when we began it, web-based applications have zoomed ahead in the last decade and we can just do a lot more with the technology now. The message board is being tested now, and when it's ready we'll post all the links and information here. This email Forum will wrap the end of July, so you have plenty of time to get used to the idea. In other news, for those of you who are interested, TIGHAR's Devastator Project has a team headed to the Marshall Islands this week, and we will be posting daily updates on the new TIGHAR News Blog. One is already up. You can access the News Blog at http://www.tighar.org/Joomla Take a look. I guess that Memorial Day is indeed a fitting day to acknowledge this significant transition! I would just like to say that this forum has been a wonderful avenue of tangency with the entire Amelia Earhart quest for me over the past 12 (already!!) years, and I want to thank Ric and Pat for their fastidious and conscientious dedication to the project. I will be sorry to see the forum go, but I will gladly jump over to the website's message board, to continue the quest! Thanks for making it all happen, both then and now! "Return to Tarawa" on the Military Channel http://military.discovery.com/tv/return-tarawa/return-tarawa.html showing garbage dumps that are building up on the beaches of Tarawa where hundreds of Americans died in 1943 wresting the island from the Japanese. Other sites on the island, including cemetaries, have been lost, partially-paved over, or built on. It's a very sobering film. More than 500 Americans are listed as "Missing in Action" on Tarawa and our government is dragging its feet to locate and repatriate their remains. LTM, Dennis O. Can ya'll make anything of this? What taphonomic factors might skew the preservation in favor of one side of the skeleton? --Mona ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 28 May 2009 21:33:15 From: Tom King Subject: Re: Bones As the non-expert in taphonomy, I'll risk letting Kar embarrass me and suggest that the body was most likely lying on its left side. That side being directly in contact with the soil and all its microorganisms, and retaining moisture by virtue of gravity and not being as exposed as the other side to sunlight and air, would decay faster and remain attractive to crabs longer than would the upper, right side. Alternatively, the body might have been lying on its right side, exposing the left side to early predation by large crabs who'd drag off the larger bones. Or maybe the crabs are commies.
