Earhart and Noonan were delayed in Lae for three days (30 June--2 July, 1937) because of the need for weather reports, an accurate time check, and "personnel unfitness" (Earhart to Putnam, 2015GMT [0630 local], 29 June 1937).[1]

It appears that they took parachutes with them, but not the flare pistol listed in the Luke Field inventory.
