"Cordia subcordata is a species of flowering tree in the borage family, Boraginaceae, that is native to eastern Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, northern Australia and the Pacific Islands."[1]

Eric Bevington observed in 1937 that "there were few coconut trees [on Nikumaroro], the vegetation being the valuable Kanoa tree almost entirely."

Gallagher noted that kanawa is "a beautifully marked wood which abounds on the island and is being cut to waste as planting proceeds."
