just because it is documented doesn't mean it's not a "story". It's actually a documented account of a story. are there even pigs on Niku??

there is another way to get ashore without a launch at that time. the New zealand survey crew unloaded all of their equipment over the stern of the norwich city while tied to it.

Are you saying Jones just made it all up?

are there even pigs on Niku??

No, and Jones did not claim to have seen pigs. He was making an assumption.

Yes, they did that.

Hays Journal: "No anchorage could be found outside the reef but we managed to tie up to the wreck of a merchant ship "The City of Norwich" which had been wrecked there in 1926. Her stern hung over the outer reef and this made a safe spot to tie up to. We transferred all our stores to the wreck and from there we manhandled them to shore which was about a third of a mile away."

No, and Jones did not claim to have seen pigs. He was making an assumption.

I'm saying he combined the things he was told with what he saw. it happens all the time. He didn't know what year the ship hit the island, he was told. etc etc.

he hears they buried the men that washed ashore and assumes they buried all of them. somehow the bones become dug up. he knows of pigs on other islands and adds that detail too. too many variables to make anything about it credible. A description of an account of a shipwreck on an island by a government official does not make it credible by itself, especially when key details of the story are incorrect to begin with.

The story has known truths and known fallacies.  He has the name of the ship right and he's correct that there were salvageable  anchors, winches, etc. which he could only know if he was there.  He has the date of the grounding and the pigs wrong.  His number of casualties is close but incorrect and he's way off on the number that were buried.
I think it's safe to say he probably saw a whole bunch of bones. Whether he had the number of skeletons right is a matter of conjecture but it's an interesting coincidence that Emily reported a similar number.
I'm not saying Jones' story eliminates the possibility that James Horne's physique was uncannily similar to Earhart's and that he survived to become the castaway of Gardner Island, but it does suggest that bodies washed up after the survivors left the are.
