coral beach landing
« on: April 12, 2014, 09:59:21 PM »

From the May 2014 Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine  page 52. A photo recon P-38 pilot (Charles Huebsch) recalling a mission where he decided to linger longer than fuel allowed so as to get valuable photos.

"'Nobody even fired a shot.' he says. After the final shutter click, he flew as far as his fuel would take him, found an island with a hard coral beach---'about the length of the flight deck on the Midway' --- and landed wheels down instead of bellying in"

Sounds familiar.
