AE and crop circles - Linked???
« on: January 07, 2014, 10:12:42 PM »

This story gave me pause: http://news.yahoo.com/crop-circle-publicity-stunt-why-39-experts-39-162721357.html

Especially this paragraph: "Why do people fall for such obvious hoaxes? Part of the answer is that the human brain is hardwired to seek meaning, even when there is no meaning to be found. In psychology, the tendency for the mind to find coincidences, patterns and connections in random data is called apophenia. In statistics, there is even a name for this type of fallacy: a Type I error. A common example of a Type I error is a false positive result on a medical test."

*thinking* There's a message in here somewhere ... apophenia ...

That is an excellent treatise with far more depth in it than would meet the ordinary reader's eye and mind, Monty.  It reflects precisely what many have argued (nicely, not as in hammer-n-tong...) about regarding rocks, coral, seaweed and shrimp and such.

Man is bad enough: given a field of wheat, a 2 x 4 and some rope, he sends the masses into hysteria (just imagine how much fun the high priests must have had with the pyramids and stonehenge in their time...).  If man can be a critter, consider that mother nature is herself the great hoaxer of all time: given geologic time, and in human terms a nearly inexhaustible supply of media and the unending forces of wind, water and fire, she baffles the mind with her endless parade of parodies of the things we 'want to see', right before our eyes and perspiring minds.

Earhart's face is faithfully presented among the clutter of a natural sea bottom; one man sees her and dares another not too.  Another sees rocks but cannot prove it is so.  Enter the ethernet and you have endless argument, one never tires of returning to the keyboard for another round, day after day when all else bores.

Enter the legal system and, well... new dimensions to the madness are wide open.  Suddenly I see a resemblance between the judicial mosaic and crop circles, at least in terms of direction (often circular) if nothing else: one man's reasonable view is a non-directional atrocity to another.  All very subjective in the end I'm afraid.

The farmers aren't exactly over the moon either with these dummies who trample crops into the ground to make pretty patterns. Thousands of $/£ worth of crops are ruined per pretty pattern each season especially in the county we live in, Wiltshire...

"Farmers across Wiltshire say the internet search engine Google has done them no favours by including a new database that shows the precise location of every crop circle in the country. This, said the farmers, can only lead to even more people trampling through and damaging their crops in their quest to visit the annual glut of formations that appears in Wiltshire fields.
About 75per cent of the UK’s crop patterns appear in Wiltshire and this has been a record year with 77 of the 93 reported nationwide being in the Moonraker county. Every summer farmers lose many thousands of pounds in trampled crops, not only the corn in the crop circles but also where the subsequent visitors walk to examine the new formations."

You don't have to be an expert to see that this vandalism is totally unnecessary and a complete waste of money  >:(

Rather ironically that's what they do Ted!!

Crop circle tourists who want to visit Wiltshire's formations are being asked to buy an access pass.

The pass, which starts on 28 June, is an effort to minimise damage to land and help compensate affected farmers.

Under the scheme, farmers who agree to give visitors access to crop circles on their land will be given the money raised from the sale of the new passes.

Organisers said they could not enforce payment but hoped visitors would "see the benefit and participate".

There truly seems to be no limit to what one person will waste of another's means and life to impart one's own impression in such things.  I admit some disappointment: I had held out hope that the circles were genuine - along with hope of it having been aliens that picked Fred and Amelia up off of Niku's shore; alas, the firm and sane tone of our British friends here suggest it is not so, but the mere trampling of expensive crop by idiots for the favor of more idiots...

As to the illusions and delusions involved, wouldn't it be a better world if people wouldn't bow to this god Apophenia to the utter ruin of others...

Well said Jeff. The guys in the local watering hole in Shrewton who have been making crop circles for years don't look very much like aliens to me and my wife. Although, come to think of it, big beer bellies, long hair, beards, wellies, mmm, not so sure now.

You never know what's lurking behind the skin of a Wellie-wearing critter like you describe, Jeff Victor - may as well be from Alpha Centauri.
