I'm curious what research may have been done in following up on Mabel Duncklee's assertion that her son was on a remote Pacific island where he was shown a grave for AE and was told the story of how AE and FN were brought there from another island by fishermen. Do we know from his military records what island he was on? Is this the first time this version of events and a telling of an AE grave (this seems not to be Tinian he is describing) has emerged or is this a common story/legend and has been adequately discredited/disproven?

Brice if you go down the list in the Amelia forum you will see category called "alternatives to the niku hypothesis ", there is post in there about duncklee from a month or so ago and Marty gives a link to PDFs of letters she sent to tighar in the early 90s. You will also see dozens of other theories many about the Japanese capturing and holding ae and fn prisoner and then executing them. There are several islands where their graves were purported to be. I'm sure no one here would object if investigated his army records and narrowed down the possibilities so that a serious discussion would be possible however tighar has limited resources and can't investigate every claim. From the letters Mrs Duncklees claims are all based on vague, incomplete memories from the 1930s ( in the case of hearing ae on the shortwave) and second hand retelling in the case of her son. That kind of evidence has to rate a bit lower on the scale than even the Betty notebooks which have a (possibly) contemporaneous written record to supplement the memories a nd which is the source of pretty intense debate on this forum right now.
