That is interesting Richie, yet another reference to the "water distilling machine" that is thought to not exist in 1937.

It is also interesting that there were very specific items listed as part of their food inventory.

See attached clipping from the New York Herald Tribune, July 9, 1937.

Well, fresh water weighs 8.34 US pounds per Gallon X 3 gallons = 25.02 pounds = 1.79 stone = 11.35 Kilograms = 11,348,881.10 Milligrams  = 400.32 Ounces = 768 Tablespoons = 2,270.99 Teaspoons (Metric) = .... well, you get the picture.. as for the food, depends on what they had. If they had a Water Buffalo stored away it could last 30 days and weigh a coupla' thousand pounds. No way to tell what the whole sentance in that news report came in at...

Sorry fella's I couldn't resist  ;D

For long term health you need a "well balanced diet" but for short term survival, not so much. What is necessary is fuel to operate your body, energy, calories. Next in importance is protein, about 2 ounces a day but you can go quite a while without protein. A standard American diet is about 2,000 calories per day but people on weight loss diets last for a long time on 1,000 calories so for survival that should be enough. Rice has 1,600 calories per pound so 10 oz. of rice per day is all you need to eat and this would also provide 1 oz of protein per day, 19 pounds of rice will feed you for 30 days.

Potato chips have 2,450 calories per pound so you only need 6.5 oz. per day, 12 pound per month, but this only provides 1/2 oz. of protein per day. Lightest of all is cooking oil, 4,000 calories per pound so you only need 7.5 pounds of cooking oil to keep you going for 30 days but no protein so you must find a fish once in a while.  So if you are able to gag down 10 tablespoons of cooking oil every day (you can space them out or just chug 5 ounces) then you have it made.

Of the items mentioned above, which of them was available in 1937? And of those items that were available in 1937, which of them do you think they may have had on board?  ;D

So what might have they carried as a snak? Do we have any documents other than a newspaper report?

Obviously the Water Buffalo "on the hoof" such as I suggested, would have been a little hard to convince to climb in the door. Not to mention what you would do with the horns?  :-\  (I wonder if Fred would have had pooper-scooper duty)

.... Say.... You don't suppose thats how Fred may have been injured do ya? ... slipped on some .... Naah! thats improbable!

Rice and cooking oil have been around for thousands of years and, according to Wikipedia, potato chips (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato_chip) were invented in 1854 and were mass produced starting with the turn of the century so they may have been available in Lae in 1937 or she could have carried them all the way from the States.
So, take your choice, throw in a jar of multivitamins, and you have a diet that will last you the rest of your life.
