It seems like the Waitt Institute has pulled the plug on its search for Amelia and Fred; the website is gone, http://searchforamelia.org/ (http://searchforamelia.org/). With that and David Billing's East New Britain theory website going dark recently, and little or no activity on any of the other theorie's websites, we're in a holding pattern while we wait for the Next Big Thing.

Well, that is a different problem from the other website. On that one, it looked a lot like an ISP reclaiming a server when a subscription had run out.
searchforamelia.org still has an apache server running. It may or may not be due to giving up the search. I've, uh, produced error messages like that myself, once or twice, whilst trying to get things sorted out.
Time will tell, I guess.
It wouldn't cost more to leave an old website accessible than to shut down the server.
It could be an emergency measure. We were forced to rebuild the TIGHAR website once upon a nightmare. It was awful!

Ted Waitt has been out of the deep-ocean search business in general, and Amelia Earhart search in particular, for a number of years now. Several years ago (could be as many as 5 years, don't remember the specific datails), Waitt Institute of Discovery lost one of its two REMUS-6000 AUVs. A couple years after that, Waitt sold its one remaining REMUS-6000.
