Yes, we’re going back.
TIGHAR has committed to mounting another expedition to Nikumaroro in May/June of 2010. Niku VI will be our tenth trip to the remote Phoenix Islands to test the hypothesis that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan landed and eventually died on the uninhabited, waterless atoll then known as Gardner Island.
Over the weekend of July 18/19, 2009 in a conference room overlooking the Philadelphia skyline, twenty-two members of TIGHAR’s Earhart Project Advisory Council (EPAC) discussed and debated the results of the 2007 Niku V expedition and began the mammoth task of organizing the targets, the teams, and the technology of what will be the most ambitious search for conclusive proof of Earhart’s fate since the ships of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard turned for home empty-handed in 1937. In addition to greatly increased search capability, the 2010 trip will offer unprecedented opportunities for public participation both on-line and as actual members of the field team.
