How do I post in the Forum?

If you start at the TIGHAR home page (http://tighar.org), then you want to click on "LATEST NEWS" to get to the news area.

Of course, you may also bookmark the news area and go there directly from your browser.  The direct link is http://tighar.org/news.

If you have already registered in the news area, then login:

If you haven't registered on the site, then click on the Register link:

After you are logged in to the news area, click on the Forum button up toward the top of the page.

When you come to the Forum, log in again, using the same username and password that you have for the news area:

When you are logged in, you will see some information about yourself.  Your picture may not be as exquisite as mine.  To put in a picture of yourself, use the PROFILE link in the Forum's tab menu (it's the fifth tab from the left in the picture below).  But that's a separate issue.  What concerns us here is how to get started posting.  To get help with that question, click on the HELP tab:

A new set of options will appear below the Forum tab menu.  To learn all about how to post, click on Posting:

Another way to learn how to post is simply to dive in and start posting.  I'm going to go to the Chatterbox and do a demo post there.

Tom Swearengen made a post in the Test thread back in August:

I want to quote part of what he said, so I click on Quote to start my reply.  I could have used the Reply tab down at the bottom of his post if I just wanted to reply without quoting anything.

In the editor for posting, there are lots of little buttons to play with.  With many of them, you first have to block the text that you want to have affected, then push the button that will surround the blocked text with tags.  In the image below, I have blocked the word "italics" and I am about to push the I button.

Things can start looking pretty ugly if you use a lot of tags.  There is no obligation to do so.  You may participate in the Forum using nothing but plain text if you wish.

If you want to check your work, use the Preview button.  If you're ready for the world to read what you read, click on the Post button:

This is part of my post in reply to Tom's post; the full image is too wide for this format:

You can see the whole post in all of its glory in the Forum.

Here is a podcast that goes through these same steps in real time.
