Different parts of the site require people to log in because we are using different kinds of software to accomplish different purposes:

The News area is bridged to the Forum so that by registering and confirming registration on the news page, you are registered and confirmed for the Forum. Even though you are pre-registered for the Forum, you still need to log into that area and configure your user profile in that area to suit your taste.
