Return of the word wrap problem

When Ric wrote his Pensacola entry for the front-page blog, it failed to wrap within the boundaries set by the left- and right-hand columns.

The photos seem to be the culprit this time.

They apparently can't be scaled on demand, so they set a minimum-width requirement for the table in which they occur.

The extra-wide table then runs under the right-hand column.

Short-term solution: use smaller photos.

566 pixels available on a 1024-wide layout:

720 pixels available on a 1260-wide layout:

And an allowance has to be made for whitespace on either side of the absolute boundaries.

Don't blame JoomlaFCK

It's not the editor's fault.  It has not idea where the articles we write are going to end up on a page.  On a 1260-pixel monitor, it allows authors to see an 847-pixel layout.

Sources for pixel rulers

A very nice article about how to measure desktop and screen objects pointed me to the Pixel Ruler used in the two screenshots up above.  It is most helpful.

Can images be scaled as needed?

DocBook XSL suggests that the answer should be "yes" :

  • In HTML output, combinations of contentwidth and width are handled by putting the graphic in an HTML table. The width attribute sets the table width to create a reserved area, and the contentwidth is used to scale the image within the table.

  • The following attributes are mutually exclusive: contentwidth, scale, and scalefit. If more than one of these attributes is used on an image, then the earliest one in this list takes precedence.

A few minues of experimenting with tables and images here suggests that we're not going to get this to work for us any time soon.  The part of the system that calculates the final layout over on the server side just doesn't know enough about the image sizes to scale them on the fly.  I think I'd have to write our own PHP scripts to manage the layout (measure pix, rescale them, they lay out the page).

So we have two options:

  • Ask authors to work within the limitations of the system.
  • Ask me to rewrite the system.

I know which one I prefer.
