Time is short and so is money. The Niku VI expedition leaves for Nikumaroro on May18 and we’re still short of what we need.

To help complete the funding for the trip – and especially for the ROV to conduct the underwater search for the Electra – the Edward E. and Marie L. Matthews Foundation has generously pledged to match your contribution, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $20,000. If you donate $50, TIGHAR gets $100; if you donate $150, TIGHAR gets $300; and so forth. You get the items you ordered, and TIGHAR gets twice the cash to put toward the expedition.

The logo for this expedition features the double helix in the hope that we’ll be able to recover material or artifacts from which mtDNA can be extracted and matched to the reference sample of Earhart mtDNA now on file.

Nikumaroro Satellite Imagery CD — $50 donation — TIGHAR gets $100

By far the most comfortable way to visit Nikumaroro. Two high-resolution satellite images of the atoll rendered as JPEG files on one CD. You can zoom in to see detail down to less than one meter.

July 21, 2007 – TIGHAR on Niku. This image was acquired during the Niku V expedition. Nai’a is clearly visible moored off the northwest tip and you can zoom in to see clearing operations under way at the Seven Site.

November 11, 2009 – Niku VI Satellite Image. This is the most recent image we have courtesy of Digital Globe. It shows extensive vegetation die-off due to apparent drought conditions. That’s good news and bad news – less grow-back to re-cut at the Seven Site but possibly a more aggressive rat population. For your convenience, we’ve boxed the Western Reef Slope and Seven Site search areas that will be the focus of the 2010 expedition. Rather have printed copies?
