You just have to click on a button or two, choose a user name and password, and you're there. This email Forum will be gone by the end of August. Pat Thrasher ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 6 Jul 2009 18:31:13 From: Tom Doran Subject: Re: New TIGHAR forum How will the new "forum" work? Will we get email that there is new traffic? There have been periods when there were ten or twenty posts a day for a while, then nothing for six or eight weeks. Are all applicants accepted or just TIGHAR members? ************************************** The new forum is web-based, so you will have to visit it. But there may be a way to send a notification of new traffic, I'll find out. The new forum will also cover *all* of TIGHAR's work, in different folders. The Earhart Project, the Devastator, the Harlech P-38, and so on, will each have a folder, so as different projects have news folks can comment and discuss. Anyone can join unless they are an obvious spammer. The rules will be pretty much the same as for the email forum, in terms of being polite and staying more or less on topic. The really nice thing for TIGHAR is that it is FREE, which the listserv forum is not. The really nice thing for TIGHAR is that it is FREE, which the >listserv forum is not. Well, TIGHAR is paying for the slice of a server that the site is running on. So it's not exactly free--but it may be less expensive than the listserv we were using. I'm not fond of page-based forums myself. I've enjoyed the AE Search Forum very much. åÊWe can install various and sundry listservs ourselves at no additional cost above the cost of the lease for the slice. I'm working on some other e-mail issues these days. Then we'll look at RSS. Maybe down the road an integrated e-mail list and forum; I don't know whether such components exist, but they should. ;o) Marty ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 08:32:08 From: Jeff Lange Subject: Re: New TIGHAR forum >The really nice thing for TIGHAR is that it is FREE, which the >listserv forum is not. Yeah- FREE is GOOD-VERY GOOD especially for a non profit! An RSS feed on forum updates isn't hard to set up and would more or less echo the "push update" of a listserv. Most browsers natively support RSS now. I wouldn't mind seeing all html "enhancements" and smiley graphics disabled on the new forum. Even graphic user icons can quickly become disruptive/distracting (they won't all look nearly as professional as Ric's :) LTM, who knew about Hyde Park back in the day. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 7 Jul 2009 15:19:15 From: Marty Moleski Subject: Re: New TIGHAR forum >From William Webster-Garman > >Paged based forums can get very ugly without tight moderation (the few >mucking things up for the many, as ever), happily this one will have >that. The upside of the website forum is that we can recruit moderators for each board. That would reduce some of the workload at TIGHAR Central. >An RSS feed on forum updates isn't hard to set up and would more or less >echo the "push update" of a listserv. I beat my head against a brick wall for a couple of hours "last night" (actually, between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM) because my college blocks traffic on port 25. Live and learn. :o( >I wouldn't mind seeing all html "enhancements" and smiley graphics >disabled on the new forum. I did produce a plain, non-animated set of smileys, FWIW. The administrators can also reject animated avatars--that should help somewhat. Electra part on PBS For those areas which receive "History Detectives" on PBS there is a upcoming (or current, depending on local schedule) segment researching a piece of aviation junk which may (or may not) have come from AE's Electra. Promos for the show are vague on what they have or what anyone thinks they have. There is a reference to the Gardner Island theory, but not to TIGHAR. They seem to place it with equal stature to the captured and shot school of thought. http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/investigations/706_ameliaearhart.html BTW, I could not find the new message board on the website. Although I was sent a username some time ago there was no password included. I can't log on to the site without both. Keep in mind that both user name and password are case sensitive. Once you done this, you can log in to the news site and go from there to the Forum section. Let me know if you have any trouble. If you have a username on the news site, you can get your password reset by visting this page: http://tighar.org/news/component/comprofiler/lostpassword The "Forgot login?" link in the login area leads to that page. Please try that first, Tom. If that doesn't help, let me know. We cannot tell you your passwords. They are encrypted. The purpose of encrypting passwords is to help limit the damage that can be done by someone breaking into our system or into part of the system. When you have used the link above to ask that a new password be sent to your e-mail address, then you can find the Forum by clicking on the "Forum" link in the blue band just under the TIGHAR logo. Alternatively, you could bookmark this link: http://tighar.org/news/forum It seems to work best if you log into the news 'n' views area first: http://tighar.org/news Then go to the Forum. You probably will have to log in there, too. Ask it to leave you logged in forever and it should work OK on subsequent visits. Here is a podcast illustrating these steps: http://screencast.com/t/ORwz4cN8mN If that doesn't answer all your questions, please let me know and I'll try again. Marty ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 28 Jul 2009 12:31:02 From: Monty Fowler Subject: Seaplanes at Niku I read with interest the idea of finding a seaplane to handle resupply and changing out the search crew during Niku VI. It seems to make a lot of sense from the logistics point if nothing else (and we know it's ALL about the logistics). My only question is - is the first team in going to have to spend the time to mark out safe seaplane landing zones? I'm assuming the PBY flights to the Coast Guard station during WW II landed in the lagoon, but to my knowledge the only survey and marking of landing zones was the New Zealand survey done in 1938. It seems to work okay. Is the software that runs the new forum capable of e-mailing new postings? By this, I mean could each of us could set our profile to have new posts e-mailed to us? I belong to another forum that notifies me by e-mail when I have a new private message (PM). Perhaps our new forum is similar? Anyway, out with the old and in with the new!!
